Before landing on your plate, arancini has traveled through the centuries and regions of Sicily. This little golden treasure, crispy on the outside and melting on the inside, is much more than a delicacy: it's a symbol of Sicilian cuisine, its roots, and its generosity.
🌍 Ancient and Delicious Origins
History tells us that arancini first appeared in Sicily during the Arab era, around the 10th century. At that time, people were already eating saffron-flavored rice, often accompanied by meat or vegetables. The idea of coating and frying it to preserve it longer then emerged, giving rise to this practical... and delicious format.
🏰 Each region has its own version
In Sicily, each city has its own way of making arancini : In Palermo, they are often round.
In Catania, they take on a conical shape, in reference to Mount Etna. The fillings also vary: meat ragù, mozzarella, ham, pistachio, and even sweet versions !
